Braddan Primary School Home Learning Policy

Aims and Objectives

At Braddan School we aim to involve parents as much as possible in helping their children to develop their learning. One way of doing this is to involve parents in their child’s home learning activities.

We see home learning as an important part of a child’s education because;

  • it supports and reinforces learning that takes place in the classroom, and allows them to practice or develop skills taught in lessons
  • it helps children to develop as independent learners
  • it helps children to see that learning happens everywhere - not just in school!
  • it allows parents to see what learning their child is involved in at school
  • it provides a base for discussion between parent and child
  • it encourages the three way partnership between pupils, parents and school
  • it helps children to develop good work habits and attitudes for the future

Parents are encouraged right from the start to be involved with supporting their children’s learning, and helping home learning be an enjoyable and rewarding activity.

Responsibility of Parents

There is an expectation that parents will support their children’s learning, and that they will;

  • read regularly with their child - at least 4 times a week - ideally every day
  • ensure that the children complete homework tasks
  • liaise with the class teacher if there are any problems arising from the home learning
  • engage in discussion with their child about their home learning activities, and be involved in the activities
  • provide their child with a suitable space in which to work at home

Responsibility of the School

Class teachers will;

  • ensure that the demands of the home learning activities are manageable for the pupils and parents
  • discuss the home learning with children, and have clearly established routines in place
  • contact the parents if a problem exists or home learning is not being completed
  • send a year group home learning letter home at the start of each year, clearly stating expectations
  • feedback to pupils, and allow time for pupils to discuss and reflect upon the learning from their activities
  • ensure no pupil is disadvantaged by a lack of parental support wherever possible (eg ensuring home reading books are sent home, allowing older pupils time to complete home learning tasks at lunchtime etc)

Responsibility of Pupils

Children will;

  • endeavor to remember the home learning routines and procedures in the class, developing skills of independence, and not relying on always being reminded by the teacher!
  • ensure they complete home learning to an acceptable standard
  • talk to their teacher if they have been unable to complete home learning, and be prepared to complete tasks at other times within the school day
