Emotional Literacy and Growth Mindset
At Braddan School, our mission to “Nurture Potential, Inspire Futures” is deeply rooted in fostering emotional literacy and a growth mindset - two essential pillars that empower our pupils to thrive both academically and personally. The Colour Monster, a tool we actively use across the school, helps children identify and articulate their emotions through colour-coded representations of feelings like happiness, sadness, anger, and calm. This simple yet powerful approach aligns perfectly with our value of being Kind and Supportive, as it creates a safe space for pupils to express themselves and seek help when needed. By encouraging daily emotional check-ins, we ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and respected. This is a core aim in our vision to create a welcoming environment where everyone is valued.
Equally vital is our commitment to instilling a growth mindset, which teaches pupils that intelligence and ability are not fixed traits but can be developed through effort, resilience, and learning from mistakes. This mindset complements our values of being Aspiring and Focused, and reinforces our vision statement to “Try Your Best.” When children understand that setbacks are opportunities for growth, they become more confident, persistent learners who embrace challenges rather than shy away from them. At Braddan, we embed this philosophy across the curriculum, from PSHE to maths interventions, ensuring that pupils not only learn the curriculum, but also develop the emotional and cognitive tools to succeed in life.
Together, these approaches create a nurturing and inspiring environment where children learn to regulate their emotions and believe in their capacity to grow. They reflect our vision to “Learn Together” and “Show Respect,” and help us build a community where every child is equipped to reach their full potential because at Braddan School, together we thrive and succeed.
